Once you’ve found the right wig for you, you may think you’ll have a good hair day everyday with very minimal effort. While wigs do offer less maintenance than your natural hair and can stand up to harsh weather conditions better than your own hair, they still require some maintenance. We know that your time is valuable and don’t want to spend your evenings and weekends taking care of your hair pieces. And sometimes you just don’t know where to start.

1. Brush or Comb with Every Wear

Brushing your wig after every wear is essential to keeping your wig tangle free, and it sets the wig up to look its best when you go to put it on the next time. This is especially key for longer length styles. For curly textures, use a wide tooth comb. And always use hair styling tools that are made for wigs, including brushes, combs, detanglers, shampoos and conditioners. These products were made to be gentle on the wig while still doing their jobs.

2. Wash, But Not Too Frequently

You should wash your wig about every two weeks, or every 10 wears. You are washing the wig to cleanse it of your scalp oils, so if you use a lot of products or sweated in the wig, you may need to wash more often. But keep in mind, every wash shortens the lifespan of the wig. When you wash the wig, brush it first. Then use warm water and gentle motions with wig shampoo to cleanse the fibers. You can opt for a leave-in conditioner or a rinse-out formula. Let the wig air dry on something like a hairspray canister, not a head form. Putting a wet wig on a head form can stretch it out.
